Let's be a world leader: ban plastic bottles

We should ban disposable plastic bottles from being sold in Jersey. There are plenty of suitable more recyclable alternatives - so we should ban plastic bottles entirely. Aluminium cans or cartons can be used as an alternative. Install free public filtered water refilling stations around St Helier and each of the villages. Encourage supermarkets/cafés to have free water refilling stations too.

Why the contribution is important

Plastic pollution is a horrible & sometimes needless environmental problem. Plastic bottles have other suitable alternatives that are more sustainable. Wider adoption of these alternatives would lower prices due to economies of scale. We can also encourage people to be healthier by drinking more water. This should be done in combo with other reductions in single-use plastics where possible (e.g. around fresh food where it is not necessary).

This should have been done years ago and whilst they are at it they could ban the totally unnecessary excess packaging from the Waitrose stores! it's like they don't know that there is an environmental responsibility?

Sadly I don't really think that's something that our Government can have much influence over. We'd need to lobby the UK regulators since Waitrose is a UK company. I highly doubt they would change their packaging because of Jersey regulations, it might just make products more expensive than they already are for Jersey consumers. It may also just be that they manufacture the products with the plastic and remove it when it gets to Jersey customs (or just before then).

That said we should be regulating local products and working with UK counterparts to encourage changes.

Good idea but plastic bottles are a drop in the ocean and are just a distraction from the real issues such as concrete, airline travel and over consumption.

Plastic will go as fossil fuels have to go as they’re a by product of the fossil fuel industry! If you check the boxes of bananas that come without the plastic bag they have now lined the boxes with the plastic instead !!! Supermarkets have the power and a massive responsibility they can demand and make change

We should all be contacting the managers of our supermarkets to tell them that we don't want to be buying unneccessary plastic.
