Legislation

It cannot be the responsibility of individuals to make change, it has to come from legislation that makes harming the environment a crime.

Why the contribution is important

Because this is an emergency. The effects of climate change will be  MUCH more damaging to society than Covid-19 so we should be seeing a response from government that is equally far reaching. The first thing is to tell the truth so the population acknowledges the need for rapid and significant change.

Left to personal responsibility alone, the overall rate of change has been painfully slow in Jersey.

Despite declaring a climate emergency, it's noticeable that leadership often defaults to talking about our historic decarbonised electricity from France instead of new initiatives, and focuses on individuals over government and business, as a way of sidestepping responsibility for policy. Climate breakdown requires government-legislated change at the speed and scale enacted for COVID, now, not in ten years time, or the next electoral cycle.

Whilst there are the data and resources out there to make a difference right now, motivation and implementation lags other places; Legislation to steer and generate wide-ranging action is urgently needed.
