Coffee cups!

A few high impact interventions have already reduced waste substantially, such as compulsory charges for shopping bags and banning plastic straws.

I would propose a mandatory minimum charge of 20p for disposable drinks cups. This could apply to all cafes, cinemas, etc. It would encourage folk to bring their own reusable cups on their daily commute /for the movie showing etc.

Each year, billions of drinks cups are thrown away and my understanding is that their biodegradability varies according to what they are coated with.

Why the contribution is important

We are turning the planet into a giant dustbin and this is not sustainable. We must convert more disposable consumables to reusable ones. This requires people to change culture and work in slightly different habits. In this regard not all plastic is bad. My mother still uses her Tupperware from the 1980s. That is better than 40 years of stuff being thrown away!

Whilst the issue of refuse waste management and pollution is somewhat on a tangent (or running parallel) to the climate crisis, we are suffering an epidemic of littering on Jersey.

This is on a huge scale with cigarette butts, plastic bottles / food containers and now single use face masks littering every street, carpark and public area.

There is virtually no policing against this and people can litter with complete impunity.

This means an unaccountable volume of waste material is dumped directly into our local environment and ecosystems. We can understand that this will be detrimental, but we don't know the volumes or the short to long term effects of this pollution.

Easily solved for rubbish on the roads and pavements. Put bins on them like the ones on the high street with the separate parts for plastic bottles, cans, paper and general waste. Then recycling will go up
