Mileage allowance for people using bikes to travel for work
If an employee has to travel between clients or offices for work and they use a car, they can claim 60p per mile against their tax liability. A bicycle is not free to run, yet no allowance is possible should the same employee choose to cycle.
To encourage cycling, I suggest making the cycling tax allowance also 60p per mile.
To go one step further, employees who get a mileage allowance paid directly from their employer should also be allowed to claim this rate back for cycling, with the employer getting some tax relief on this expense.
Why the contribution is important
This would remove the incentive for people to use their cars for work related travel, and encourage people financially to choose cycling.
