Promote use of public transport for students

It has been debated in the States and it will come up again, free bus use for students. Encourage children and young people to access public transport for their school commute and give  them their independence to travel out of school time. This takes cars off the school run and always takes the mum and dad taxi off the roads in leisure time. Just one example, if they are going to build the skatepark at Les Quennevais bus use could be encouraged to transport youngsters to this site.

Why the contribution is important

Travel to school should not be costing so much, for families on lower incomes, bus fares every day can be expensive. The aim should be to reduce cars doing the school run. We are all aware of the congestion every day at school time. If children are not walking or cycling, the school bus is the most efficient means of transport.

Of course all public transport for young people in Education should be free. We should be promoting public transport but also free access to education - which includes how you get there.

Completely agree. Also wonder if free school buses could be used for primary school age children. In Luxembourg all children take the bus including kindergarten. There's a supervisor on the bus in addition to the driver so parents can be reassured the little ones are safe

EVie has explored the provision of shared student electric and pedal bicycles unsuccessfully with the government. However, we will be launching a very limited service with a small number of schools shortly. However, to make the project deliverable at scale it requires the help of the government.
